This is the story of two Scotsman who set sail for the World Cup from California. Destination?

Foxboro Saturday night for Scotland’s first match in the World Cup Finals for 28-years.

At Scotland’s last World Cup appearance, France98 one of the Scotsman Rod Stewart was about thirty years strong into his current six-decade long music career. Whilst the other Craig Ferguson wasn’t even born the last time Scotland played in a World Cup.

Sir Rod had already seen Scotland play at six previous World Cups. Including five straight between Germany74 and Italia90. Whilst Scotland’s Auld Enemy the English failed to qualify for both Germany74 & Argentina78. Plus the English pulled a no show the last time the World Cup was held on American soil, USA94

Ferguson arriving in Boston Common to a hero’s welcome

Back in early February Craig Ferguson left his Paisley, Glasgow home to fly to LA. Rod Stewart was in LA last Thursday ahead of a scheduled Friday night gig in Chula Vista, near San Diego.

At about the same time Larin was hitting the old onion bag against Bosnia Ferguson was arriving in Boston. Young Craig likely went through more shoes than Rod has Gold Discs walking an incredible 3,500 odd miles from California to Boston. Not known how many Irn-Bru’s Craig drank along the way. Or pints for that matter. 

It took Ferguson over 4-months and with my rudimentary maths he would have averaged over 30 miles a day. Every day for 120 plus days. Morning, noon, and night. Raising close to $2m for Mental Health initiatives as he went. What a fella. 

Rod the Plod meanwhile straight after posting his apologies om his Insta account for having to cancel last Friday night’s California Dreaming gig for health reasons text two of his eight kids to meet him at the nearest private airfield as they were off on Rod the Plod One to Boston.

You wear it well Rod… the laryngitis that is

82-years young Rod apparently has a nasty bout of laryngitis and it’s probably why he was spotted double dipping on the sherbets when the cameras zoomed into his front row Foxboro sky box in the later stages of the Haiti match. Looking as elegant as ever, and not a hint of a health issue about him.

It's almost impossible to know if Rod’s been on the ale since February when Craig set off on his walk or it was Sir’s first drinks of the night. Rod is the possessor of a face that always looks like it’s having a good time. George Best was another such face

For every Gianni Infantino at a World Cup there’s always mercifully for mankind a Craig Ferguson. No word yet if Ferguson has made it onto the short list for the 2026 FIFA Peace Award. 

Meanwhile Sir Rod has surely already captured the 2026 World Cup FIFA Pish Award.
